Frequently Asked Questions

How much improvement can I expect?

The amount of improvement you can expect will depend heavily on the amount of time you dedicate to practicing. For participants who are motivated and dedicate at least 30 minutes per day to listening to the materials sent customized to your needs, and practicing these tailored exercises, a level of at least 75% improvement can be expected. Repetition and practice are imperative to changes that become automatic in your everyday conversational speech.

What type of payment do you accept?

Personal Checks
Corporate Checks
PayPal

Credit Cards

Will my insurance cover this service?

No, because an accent is not a speech disorder, your customized training program is a professional training program, not speech therapy.

Is the payment due before the training begins?

No, you can make personal arrangements. Following your free, no obligation consultation session, a payment plan can be designed to suit your needs. A 10% discount is given for participants who make a one- time payment.

Your program is more expensive than some of the others I have seen, why?

Keep in mind your sessions will be fully customized to your speech sound patterns. At The Speech Coach, we do not use a pre-made program or “cookbook” approach. All participants start by sending a recorded speech sample which is then carefully analyzed by an experienced, licensed Speech-Language Pathologist. An individualized plan is then created just for you based on your speech patterns and your goals for change. Following each session, your Speech Coach will send you a practice guide along with a personal recording that includes personal vocabulary that you use frequently and that may have come up during our one on one sessions.  Pre-recorded listening materials and coming soon, video practice materials will also be included in this price. Your Speech Coach is also available for questions you may have in between sessions. For example, let’s say you are having trouble being understood while using a specific word at the workplace and you would like immediate assistance… with your program fee, you have access to your speech coach to instant message and receive a recorded message back within minutes.

What are the technical requirements to receive training online?

To begin your program via the internet, you will need a computer or laptop with a web camera as well as a microphone.  For optimal results, a headset with microphone is recommended which will help you hear and produce the sounds more clearly versus a built-in microphone. A high-speed internet connection is also important. You will need a Skype account, which is free and can be set up easily online.

Is training online just as effective as face to face training?

Yes, training online is also more flexible to meet the demands of your busy schedule. It allows you to receive instruction in the privacy and comfort of your own home or office without taking the time to travel.

Where does training take place?

You can begin training right where you are, in the comforts of your own home, at your workplace, or perhaps while on vacation worldwide through Skype or Google Hangouts.  Training is also available in-person, by appointment only, at 242 Craven Street, in Downtown New Bern, NC.

Can I make up a missed session?

Yes, as long as you provide 24 hours notice prior to canceling a scheduled session, you can reschedule without charge.

Do you provide other services besides accent reduction?

Yes, as a Speech-Language Pathologist, your speech coach can address speech sound disorders such as frontal lisp, lateral lisp, imprecise production of “r', or other persistent speech errors.

When Can I Start?

Are there any Pre-Requisites to the Training?

Generally, you must have a good command of English before partaking in accent modification.  We recommend at least a 5th grade level of reading and writing in the English language. Accent modification is not an ESL class (English as a Second Language).  Rather it's the training you would take after ESL classes to perfect your pronunciation.
